Packing up a computer can be a hassle! It is tempting to just unplug everything, throw it all in a box and not worry about the time it will take to untangle the cords when reconnecting it. The purpose of this article is to help you pack your computer in an organized way that will allow you to successfully protect it during your move as well as setting it up when you unpack Using these tips should make packing it up a little easier. Do you still have the boxes and packing supplies it came with? It may be obvious, but I'll go ahead and say it anyway Those boxes were specifically designed for your computer and will provide excellent protection. Use them if you can. Don't have the original boxes? Then here are some suggestions that will make your life easier. The best packaging supplies for computer equipment are foam pads, bubble wrap and clear plastic bags. Foam chips should not be used as they contain and produce static electricity; which may harm computer components. Before you even think of packing - back up all your data. Turn your computer off and unplug it from the wall. Label the cords and cables so you know where to plug them back in later. Some people use a diagram and others take a photo. How To Pack Your Computer Equipment Cables - To avoid nasty tangles, wrap cables with twist ties, tape, or elastic bands. Hard Drive - The hard drive is best left in the computer. But if you do need to remove it for some reason, it should be packed snugly in the center of a large box with foam pads and styrofoam holding it in place. Be sure to put it in a static free bag. Monitor - Place the monitor in a plastic bag to protect the screen. Once again, a large box should be used so that there is plenty of space for padding. Bubble wrap, foam pads and styrofoam are all great at filling the air spaces and immobilizing the monitor. Keyboard - Protect the keys of the keyboard with a piece of foam and then wrap the whole thing in plastic and/or bubble wrap. Box separately. Sound Cards and Memory Chips - Usually, you just leave these inside the computer. But if you do have to remove them, be sure they are wrapped separately in Anti-Static bags. Normal plastic and paper products may damage these components. Make sure that each piece is cushioned with bubble wrap and foam pads. Mouse - To keep the mouse clean, put it in a little plastic bag. If you have a battery-operated wireless mouse, remove them before storing it in a plastic bag. External CD Rom Drives and Modems - These pieces of equipment should be wrapped in bubble wrap and packaged individually. Printer - Remove all trays, arms and paper and wrap them in plastic bags. The printer, too, can be put in a plastic bag and packed with foam and styrofoam in its own box. CDs and DVDs - Simply store these in any of the standard cases. These products are very durable and will take a lot of punishment. Remember to place each item carefully in a box so that individual pieces won't bump into each other during the move. Label each box clearly with a FRAGILE - THIS SIDE UP message. You may even wish to use a DO NOT STACK message on some of the more delicate pieces. Follow these tips and you will find that packing and reconnecting your computer is something you CAN do! Good luck!
