Pregnancy Induced Hypertension

By: Christian Goodman

Everywhere I go I see women who are going about their daily routines. Some of these women though, are also negotiating their days while carrying a child or children who are not yet born.
Some women however, are afflicted with complications such as Pregnancy Induced Hypertension. Often times this condition does not allow the mother to continue many or most daily activities.
PIH (Pregnancy Induced Hypertension) presents itself in over 5% of pregnant women. Situations in which high blood pressure has been present prior to pregnancy is known as chronic high blood pressure.
Both chronic hypertension and PIH can be serious conditions for mother and child. Gestational high blood pressure, while not necessarily as threatening, can increase the risk of PIH developing later in pregnancy.
Why PIH poses problems
Insufficient blood flow to vital organs occurs with high blood pressure. Therefore, the baby's development is also threatened.
Placental abrutpion, premature abruption from the placenta, can occur as a result of inadequate blood flow. The baby's nutritional needs may not be met in cases of PIH. That can result in the baby being underdeveloped.
Worse, PIH left untreated can lead to seizures, the mother's death and/or fetal death.
Symptoms of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (not a complete list):
constant or extreme nausea blurred vision edema hypertension
Each symptom alone does not necessarily mean that PIH is present. It is usually a combination of two or more symptoms.
Increased OB/GYN appointments may be necessary to determine the seriousness of such symptoms or if PIH has in fact developed.
Treating PIH
Delivery of the baby is almost always if not always necessary to cure PIH, The baby is not usually developed enough though until near the end of pregnancy for this option to be viable.
Bed rest may be in order to help alleviate PIH complications. Even hospitalization is necessary in severe cases.
Experiencing pregnancy complications can leave the mother and the father emotionally stressed. High blood pressure as a result of such stress can then be present in the father as well.
In spite of complications, nearly all pregnancies are concluded with heathly babies and parents. However, you must be diligent with your pre-natal care. Stress reduction can also help alleviate added problems during pregnancy.
Whether you are experiencing a normal, healthy pregancy or a more complicated one, my blood pressure program can assist with stress reduction. Both partners can benefit greatly by reducing anxiety during such a sensitive time.
