Stop Smoking Remedies - Can These Remedies Give You The Edge

By: Denzil De Vries

One of the most popular and well-known stop smoking remedies is the patch. Available in most drugstores, the patch helps smokers quit smoking by removing some of the discomfort associated with the symptoms of withdrawal. Though smokers will still experience cravings and other symptoms, the patch does enable smokers to withstand their cravings for longer periods of time.
In order to achieve the desired result, the patch must be used consistently for three months, each and every day. More than half of the smokers who use this particular stop smoking remedy are successful in quitting. There are some side effects and some people have trouble sleeping, and also the skin may become irritated due to the patch. Quitters are also advised to seek counseling while they are trying to kick the habit as well.
Among the more effective stop smoking remedies is the so-called "pill." The proper name is bupropion or Zyban, and it is a prescription anti-depressant. It wasn't created to help smokers, but it has been proven to decrease the severity and incidence of withdrawal symptoms. Many sources cite Zyban as being two times as effective as the patch. Difficulty sleeping and dry mouth are possible side effects of Zyban. Zyban is convenient and doesn't carry the risk of dependency.
Several stop smoking remedies which are less effective yet still popular are nicotine gum and inhalers. Gum, an oral remedy, will help a smoker who suffers cravings during withdrawal periods. When withdrawal symptoms start taking their toll, individuals may chew nicotine gum in lieu of smoking. It's most effective when used for three months and may be chewed frequently. Some people have even chewed up to 24 sticks of gum daily. Nicotine inhalers have the distinct advantage of letting ex-smokers to use it whenever the urge to smoke strikes. Transitioning away from smoking is simpler because it imitates the sensation of smoking. Side effects of inhalers are throat and mouth irritation.
Some people prefer natural stop smoking remedies. Many individuals put salt on their tongue whenever they feel like they need a smoke. This psychological remedy mimics the theory of behaviorism, which claims that people can be trained to respond in certain ways. By putting salt on their tongue, these individuals come to associate the urge to smoke with the distasteful taste of salt, and thus, this helps them quit smoking,
When quitting smoking, it is an important to drink plenty of water. Smokers also can try drinking a mixture of celery and carrot juice which will minimize the craving for nicotine. Smokers can also be helped by exercise which will keep them preoccupied and will release relaxing, natural endorphins.
In order for any stop smoking remedies to work, individuals must stay true to their goal. They need to have the will and the honest desire to move past the addiction. Quitting completely must be a high priority. It is a hard habit to overcome, but eventually with dedication, the urge to smoke will cease.
